Cobalt blue/black body con dress New Look, £16

The flattering body con dress, initially the brainchild of Hervé Léger in 1985, has made a revolutionary come-back in the shape of this stunning number from New Look at an equally stunning £16. The material is a soft stretch-cotton jersey that has the right lycra-cotton mix to keep the shape whilst feeling soft on the skin. I realise I’m gushing and mildly hysterical but the cobalt blue/black colour-block design is impressively cut so that the seam is higher than the waist-line…similar to an empire line proportion. For those who’ve tried and dismissed body con before, you’ll understand why this is an important detail : it creates a much sleeker silhouette than mother nature intended!

Ok, ok at first the thought of trying a pair of leggings that claimed to be an alternative to skinny jeans filled me with dread too. What were these designers thinking of? Didn’t they realise that us mortals wear leggings as an excuse to cover up ? This new mutation seemed to imply baring all… quelle horreur! But my inhibitions soon disappeared when I found my crush at TopShop…a perfectly cut pair of skinny-style jeans in the most comfortable (and strong) stretch material possible. Don’t be fooled into thinking of this breed as a “young person’s jean” as you’d be totally missing out. Instead, think of them as the most cosy all-weather boyfriend jeans you could wish to wear …that not only feel better but also fit beautifully. Goodbye muffin top jeans..hello Jeggings!
